Retro Gaming on Tegra: Which Emulators Actually Deliver in 2024?
There's something deeply satisfying about firing up a classic game on hardware you already own. Tegra devices — from the aging-but-capable Shield Tablet to the ever-popular Nintendo Switch running custom firmware — have become go-to retro gaming machines for a huge chunk of our community. But with so many emulators out there and so many different Tegra chips in the wild, figuring out what actually runs well can feel like a part-time job.
We did the homework so you don't have to. Here's how popular emulators stack up across Tegra generations in 2024, with optimization tips and honest assessments for each platform.
A Quick Note on Hardware Generations
For this guide, we're primarily looking at three tiers of Tegra hardware:
- Tegra K1 (Shield Tablet, Nexus 9) — the older guard
- Tegra X1 / X1+ (Shield TV, Nintendo Switch, Shield TV Pro) — the current sweet spot
- Tegra Xavier (Jetson-based devices) — the enthusiast tier
Most of you are probably in that X1/X1+ category, so that's where we'll spend the most time. But K1 owners, don't click away — you're still very much in the game for a lot of this.
NES and SNES: Basically Flawless Everywhere
Recommended emulator: RetroArch (Nestopia UE core for NES, SNES9x or bsnes for SNES)
Let's start with the easy wins. NES and SNES emulation is so well-optimized at this point that even Tegra K1 hardware handles it without breaking a sweat. We're talking locked 60fps across every title we tested, with zero audio stuttering and accurate emulation.
On Tegra X1 devices, you can push things further — enable integer scaling for pixel-perfect output, crank up the internal resolution, and layer on shaders that replicate the look of a CRT television without any performance cost whatsoever. Optimization tip: For K1 users running RetroArch, set your video driver to Vulkan if your build supports it. It reduces input latency noticeably compared to the OpenGL driver on older Tegra silicon.
Difficulty to set up: Easy. RetroArch has a learning curve for newcomers, but once you're past the initial configuration, it's smooth sailing.
N64: Solid, With Some Caveats
Recommended emulator: Mupen64Plus-Next (via RetroArch) or standalone M64Plus FZ
Nintendo 64 emulation has come a long way, but it still requires a bit more attention than 16-bit platforms. On Tegra X1 and X1+ hardware, the vast majority of the N64 library runs at full speed with accurate emulation. Goldeneye 007, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie — all run beautifully.
Where things get trickier is with demanding titles like Conker's Bad Fur Day or Resident Evil 2 on N64. These push the emulator harder and can drop frames on K1 hardware. On X1, they're manageable with some settings adjustments.

Optimization tip: Enable the "Gliden64" graphics plugin over "Angrylion" for Tegra devices. Angrylion is more accurate but significantly more demanding — Gliden64 hits the right balance of accuracy and performance for our hardware.
Difficulty to set up: Moderate. Per-game configuration tweaks are sometimes necessary for best results.
Dreamcast: Surprisingly Great on X1
Recommended emulator: Redream or Flycast (via RetroArch)
This is where things start getting exciting. Dreamcast emulation on Tegra X1 hardware is genuinely impressive in 2024. Redream in particular has matured into an excellent option — it's user-friendly, actively maintained, and handles the Dreamcast library with solid compatibility.
We tested Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Jet Set Radio, and Shenmue across Shield TV Pro and a Switch running Flycast. Results were overwhelmingly positive. Shenmue, historically one of the more demanding Dreamcast emulation targets, held near-solid 30fps on the Shield TV Pro with Redream's "HD" rendering mode enabled.
On Tegra K1 hardware, Dreamcast emulation is doable but expect to run at native resolution and accept occasional frame drops in busier scenes. It's still playable for most titles, but the experience is noticeably less polished than on X1.
Optimization tip: In Redream, set your rendering resolution to 2x native on Tegra X1 devices. You get a meaningfully sharper image without the performance hit that 4x brings. On K1, stick to 1x.
Difficulty to set up: Easy to moderate. Redream especially is one of the most beginner-friendly emulators available right now.
GameCube: The Exciting Frontier
Recommended emulator: Dolphin
Okay, here's where we have to be real with you. GameCube (and Wii) emulation via Dolphin is the most demanding thing most of us will run on Tegra hardware, and results vary significantly.
On Tegra X1+ (specifically the Shield TV Pro), simpler GameCube titles like Mario Kart: Double Dash, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Wind Waker run at full speed with the right settings. More demanding titles — think Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, or Rogue Squadron — will struggle, often dropping into the 40–50fps range even with aggressive optimization.
On the original Tegra X1, expect a step down from that. Melee and Double Dash are still playable, but you'll be tweaking settings more aggressively and accepting some compromises.
Tegra K1? Dolphin is technically installable, but GameCube emulation at playable speeds is largely out of reach for that hardware. Stick to the platforms above.

Optimization tip: In Dolphin's graphics settings, switch to OpenGL ES backend on Tegra devices. Vulkan sounds appealing but has known driver compatibility issues with several Tegra chipsets. Also, enable "Skip EFB Access from CPU" — it's a compatibility risk on some titles but a significant performance boost on most.
Difficulty to set up: Hard. Dolphin has a lot of knobs to turn, and getting stable performance on Tegra requires patience and per-game profile management.
